As for one-hit wonders, though it’s fantasy rather than sci-fi, how about Tolkien? It’s a of a hit, but the various Middle-Earth publications are basically on big epic. And Tolkien is not largely known for anything else outside of scholarly circles.

Didn’t the author have to search around for a publisher who didn’t insist he change the ending to a happy one where he keeps his enhanced intelligence and the girl, too, and live happily ever after (both in the case of the original short story and the later novel expansion)?
