How about the Great Moon Hoax printed up as a series of articles in the New York Sun in the 1830s? Claiming a new powerful telescope allowed them to observe activities of an alien civilization on the moon. I think that sort of thing is being revisited now, only dealing with alien bases on the far side of the Moon that we can’t see from our planet and that governments are ”gushing up”.
