0042: A Pail of Air, by Fritz Leiber

Fritz Leiber's A Pail of Air is a unique view of life on Earth after the end of the world. This inspires us to categorise end of the world movies, and somehow we spend a lot of time talking about Tarzan and the Valley of Gold (a.k.a. Tarzan and the Lost City).

But my favourite were Sterling Lanier’s books ”Hiero’s Journey” and ”Unforsaken Hiero” dealing with a far future mutated Metis adventurer with advanced psychic powers and his intelligent giant moose mount. I believe the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game’s incorporation of psionics stems from those books.

I have a particular liking for post-apocalyptic stories, dating from when I read Andre Norton’s ”Star Man’s Son” as a kid ( I believe that book was aimed at younger readers)

Fritz Lieber was also at times an actor, both in films and on stage. Both his parents were successful actors, his father Fritz Sr. appearing several films such as ”The Sea Hawk”. Fritz Jr (the author) appeared in ”The Bermuda Triangle”. I keep confusing him with Fritz Weaver, who had a more familiar face.
