I first encountered this story as a graphic novel adaptation by Howard Chaykin. A sample of the first couple of chapters of that comic were featured in and 1979 issue of Heavy Metal magazine (I had a subscription for a couple of years back then) The story hooked me and I bought the paperback edition of the novel as soon as I saw it in a bookstore. Still have it and reread it periodically. Amazed it was never adapted to a film, but glad Hollywood never took the opportunity to ruin it.
