I encountered this short story in the same way—the same collection: Tales of Time and Space. I got it for Christmas 1970; it is inscribed ”from Aunt Ann and Uncle Max, Xmas 1970”. I was nine and two weeks from turning ten. I still have the book. I remember enjoying this story when I read it back then, though it wasn’t my favourite from that anthology; that was the Jack Finney story ”Of Missing Persons” or the Fredric Brown one, ”Puppet Show” (for the twist at the end).
