And the 1959 movie ”The Killer Shrews” for another group of besieged folks in a building battling a horde of mutant animals hungry for flesh. Has both Festus and Sherriff Rodcoe P. Coltrane in it. And pet dogs made up to look like the mutant giant shrews.

And there’s the 1930s Robert E. Howard story ”Pigeons from ” dealing with a zombie (or actually a female zombie, which he terms a ”zuvembie”) that was a very spooky and bloody tale. That one was actually in a house.

Jack London’s ”The Scarlet Plague” has an old man is a primitive violent society who is the last to remember he civilisation destroyed by pandemic, and is ridiculed by the young when he tries to tell them. Very lonely. No shuffling zombies, though. Just post apocalyptic brutalism with no inherent nobility of mankind left.
